Builder floors bring their own trouble. Narrower stairwells, smaller doors, sofas whose legs must come off before they fit through. Mention on the phone if you live on the second or third floor of one, because the crew size changes.

Wrapping almirahs and showcases

Heavy steel and wooden almirahs are emptied, sheeted in corrugated board, covered with stretch film and then strapped tight so the doors cannot swing open halfway down the stairs. On the face that should point outward, one of our boys writes the word FRONT in marker. Small habit. It saves a lot of shuffling inside a cramped bedroom at the new place.

Showcase glass is removed where possible and travels separately, wrapped in its own layers.

Defrost the fridge the evening before, then leave its door open for an hour to dry out. Mattresses and the fridge both travel fully covered, so nothing rubs against the stairwell walls on the way down.

Before the crew rings your bell

• Keep a small overnight bag aside with medicines, chargers, clothes, the kettle and tea.
• Jewellery, cash and property papers stay with you. Honestly, we prefer not to carry them.
• Snap a photo of the TV and set-top box wiring before unplugging.
• Clear the loft and the terrace a few days early, since that is where surprises hide.

Gates, guards and RWA timings

Most lanes here are gated, and the guards ask questions. Some RWAs restrict truck entry to certain hours. A few want written intimation.

Call your RWA office or the main gate a few days ahead with the date, the time and our vehicle number once you have it. Any restriction, tell us. Usually that means an early start, before school traffic fills the internal roads and the Sohna Road jam builds.
